Brief History about African Masters of Stone

Vision

African Masters of Stone are suppliers of the finest contemporary Shona Sculpture from Zimbabwe. We are passionate about what we do and how we do it. We are committed to providing the platform from which these Artists can present their work. It is extremely important to us that the Artists are not exploited but receive a fair financial value for their work. This allows them to continue a sustainable living and receive the credit they deserve. African Masters of Stone are also committed to donating 10% of our profits to charities fighting against poverty Zimbabwe.

Origins of African Masters of Stone

Gareth Mutema (Director of African Masters of Stone) was born in Zimbabwe and spent 16 years among the artists and sculptors. It was during this time that he developed his passion for the Shona Sculpture movement. His experience and local knowledge of the culture ensures that African Masters of Stone acquire only the finest quality sculptures. His experience of seeing close family members grow to become sculptors themselves and artisans in their own right provides African Masters of Stone with an authentic understanding and appreciation of Shona Sculpture.

Growth of African Masters of Stone

Mark Whitfield (Director of African Masters of Stone) was born in the United Kingdom and has spend most of his life as a entrepreneur. He partnered up with Gareth to form African Masters of Stone. His knowledge and experience has been vital in the shona sculpture movement.

Ethical Trade

African Masters of Stone have developed personal and working relationships with our artists. When you purchase a sculpture from our site you are helping towards providing a stable and sustainable income for our artists. Although we work closely with many well known artists, it is our aim to provide a platform on which upcoming talent can be displayed. African Masters of Stone are committed to donating 10% of our profits back to charities working in Africa.
